Route Nationale is the first music theatre production of Gloria; the youngest group of Orkater/De Nieuwkomers; director/writer Eva Tijken, dramaturge Floor Houwink ten Cate and composer Christiaan Verbeek (Gouden Kalf for Best Music). They used the black comedy film Week-end by Jean-Luc Godard and the short story The southern motorway by Julio Cortázar as an inspiration.

On their way to her parents in the south, Marie and her husband Jacques get stuck in traffic. The traffic jam lasts hours, days, maybe even weeks, and confronts the couple with poverty, hunger, violence and the human incompetence to share. In this absolute standstill, the thoughts of the couple form the only perceptible movement. Under the pressure of two unsavory musicians and the female singer/trumpettist Gloria they are forced to revise the relationship with themselves and their environment.
Orkater/De Nieuwkomers (newcomers), the talent development program of Orkater, gives young, educated musictheatre makers the possibility to convert their ideas into reality. The shows are played at festivals and small venues. Route Nationale is the 15th production of Orkater/De Nieuwkomers.
